Pho Hoang Vietnamese Cuisine and BBQ, Flushing, New York, United States (Food rating: 4/5)

At Pho Hoang Vietnamese Cuisine and BBQ (阿宏越南牛肉河粉), it served authentic Vietnamese cuisine and Cantonese roasted meat. We sought shelter from the rain when we found this restaurant. Since our first adventure at Pho Hoang, we went back almost every other day. The restaurant seemed popular as the customer turnover was high.

We usually order two mains, two sides and two beverages at each visit. And we spent an average of USD30.00. It is the place to go if I were to miss local food.

Cravings for roasted meat? Why not try the Cantonese Style roasted meat at Pho Hoang Vietnamese Noodles Restaurant? We ordered a Three Treasures over Rice which was three kinds of roasted meat over rice. So, we chose roast duck, soy chicken and roasted pork belly. At USD7.25, this was the most worthwhile meal. The portion was huge and you may want to buy a plate to share. The roasted pork belly was very well seasoned. The skin was so crispy that it made crackling sounds as you chewed the roasted pork. The meat was tender and moist. (Food rating: 3.5/5)

Subsequently, we ordered more Three Treasures over Rice. We chose different combinations with roast duck, soy chicken, roasted pork belly and BBQ pork. All of them were heavenly delicious. I loved them immensely.

The crispy wontons (港式炸云吞) pan fried to golden brown colour tasted ordinary. Each serving of six wontons cost USD6.50 which was fairly expensive for a side dish. The wontons were a little oily as they were not drained sufficiently. The meat filling in the wontons were tender and moist. A dip in their mayonnaise sauce or chilli sauce would be superb. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

The Beef Chow Fun (干炒牛河), priced at USD7.50, was a little bland. However, the beef chow fun or flat noodles were lightly charred, just the way I liked it. There was a subtle wok fragrance. The beef slices were tender and delicious. We added a little light soy sauce to add more taste to the bland chow fun, otherwise it would be a superb dish. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

I had strong cravings for fried rice. It had been at least two months since I ate a good and delicious plate of fried rice. I ordered a plate of Fried Rice with anchovies and salted fish (金双银炒饭). At USD8.25, it was a large serving. Unless you are famished, it would be best shared. The rice was a little wet as if it was cooked today. Fried rice is best cooked with overnight rice. The fried rice was not grainy in texture just the way I expected for a Cantonese Styled restaurant. The fried rice had eggs, mixed vegetables, chicken slices, anchovies and salted fish. Although the serving was fairly large, I was famished and gobbled three-quarters of the plate. (Food rating: 3/5)

Assam Laksa Noodle Soup (亚三拉沙), priced at USD5.95, comprised rice noodles, cucumber strips, large red onions, and thick sour-fish soup base. The broth had small fish chunks which tasted like sardines. Though it was rather an acquired taste, the noodle dish was not bad. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

Grilled Chicken Chop (越南烧鸡扒) was heavenly! It tasted so much like the Singaporean Chicken Satay Sticks without the spicy peanut gravy. The lemongrass fragrance with charred corners was absolute delicious. The grilled chicken chop cost USD4.75. (Food rating; 4/5)

Wonton Dry Noodles (干捞云吞面), priced at USD6.95, was the highlight if you miss having wonton noodles in Singapore. The noodles were chewy and large portion. The wontons were very freshly prepared that the filling in the dumpling were crispy. The soup was very refreshing and delicious. However, the beansprouts were very raw. I left them untouched. (Food rating: 4/5)

BBQ Meat and Wonton Dry Noodles (干捞叉烧云吞面), priced at USD6.95, was as good as it got for a wonton noodles similar to our local food. The noodles was still chewy and the black sauce tasted nice. The BBQ meat or Char Siew Pork was sweet and tender. The noodle dish came with a bowl of wonton soup. (Food rating: 4/5)

Grilled Pork Chop (越南烧猪扒), priced at USD2.95 per piece, was another MUST TRY appetiser. The pork was tender and moist. The charred corners and marinade made the grilled meat absolutely delectable. (Food rating: 4/5)
