Bangkok Thai, Flushing, New York, United States (Food rating: 2.5/5)

Located in the heart of Flushing, Queens, New York, Bangkok Thai is said to be highly rated and the "best in Queens".

After having Chinese food for three consecutive weeks, my friend and I decided to try something different. For the last couple of days, we have been trying different kinds of cuisine. Today, we wanted to have Thai food.

The two of us ordered four dishes and two beverages. These cost us USD35.00 including taxes and tips.

Both of us strongly agreed that this would be our first and last time dining at Bangkok Thai. The Thai cuisine should possess strong aromatic components and a spicy edge. At Bangkok Thai, the food was normal and it lacked the essence of Thai cuisine. The most memorable dish was the sweet and sour chilli sauce from the Thai Fried Fish Cakes, which we believed that it might come from a bottle.

Thai Fried Fish Cakes (10 pcs), priced at USD5.00, were mini sizes of approximately 3cm in diameter. The fish cakes tasted nice when eaten hot and dipped with the chilli sauce. These cakes were normal and nothing to scream about. The sweet and sour chilli sauce was the best amongst the food we have ordered. It had the correct proportion of sweetness and spiciness. Thai Tom Yum Soup, priced at USD5.50, was normal. To name it as Tom Yum, we felt that it would be an insult to the Thai cuisine. Tom Yum is characterised by its distinctive hot (spicy) and sour flavours. At Bangkok Thai, the soup was neither hot nor sour. It was mildly spicy (Spicy level - 0.5/5) which they might have readapted to the local palate. We ordered the tom yum soup with chicken meat. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

The Red Curry is one of the popular dishes in Thailand. The curry comprise fresh herbs, curry paste and coconut milk which goes well with steamed rice. At Bangkok Thai, Thai Red Curry (泰式红咖喱) (photo above), priced at USD6.50, was not up to par. Compared to Thai Express and Absolute Thai in Singapore, the curry from Bangkok Thai lacked fragrances from the herb and coconut milk, and spiciness. Despite all these, it was still okay normal. Thai Basil Fried Rice (泰式辣味炒饭), priced at USD7.50, was supposedly a spicy dish. At Bangkok Thai, the fried rice tasted normal and it lacked the spiciness and fragrance from the basil leaves. At first, I thought it tasted more like a normal egg omelette. The only saving grace was that the portion was huge enough for two. (Food rating: 2.5/5)

We also ordered a glass of Thai Tea, which was made strongly brewed Ceylon Tea. The tea was not bad and it had some fragrance. (Food rating: 2.5/5)
